The Laboratory of Synthesis and Evaluation of Attractants

Research directions

Determination of chemical properties and biological activity of new attractant components. Elaboration of new synthesis methods for attractants, improvement of known synthesis schemes for pheromones, and working out the technological procedures for their production under the laboratory conditions.

Relevant results

•    Selection, identification of chemical structure and synthesis of cotton leaf worm (ballworm) sex pheromone. This pheromone was used in the integrated plant protection of cotton, sweet maize, tomatoes and other vegetable crops by monitoring or mass trapping of the pest males.
•    Synthesis of the grape moth sex pheromone. The sex pheromone was used in integrated vineyard plant protection system for monitoring or mass pest male trapping.
•    Codling moth sex pheromone synthesis. The traps with this pheromone were utilized in integrated system for apple trees orchards protection by monitoring or pest male mass trapping.
•    Preparative forms manufacturing for plum fruit moth sex pheromone on the base of synthetic line string. They were used in biological protection of plum trees orchards by pest male disorientation.

Business proposals

Sex pheromone traps were used for monitoring and combating the main harmful insects - the codling moth in apple trees orchards, ball worm (cotton leaf worm) on cotton and vegetable cultures (tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.), grape moth in vineyards, plum fruit in plum tree orchards by monitoring, pest male mass trapping and disorientation.

Laboratory of Phytopatology and Biotechnology as a part of  scientific subdivision of the  Institute of Genetics, Physiology and Plant Protection represents a scientific research structure specialized on the  identification of plant diseases causative agents, development and implementation of microbial products for plant protection.  

Mission of the laboratory in the framework of the academic activities is investigation, innovation, counseling and technology transferring, as well as counseling of the decision-making bodies, empowering companies and government agencies to actively promote sustainable and inclusive development by elaborating and implementing modern biotechnologies for phytosanitary problems solving and organic agriculture promotion.

Strategic priorities:

1. Conducting research, counseling and analysis based on the identification of plant diseases causative agents, elaboration and implementation of microbial plant protection products.
2. Empowering communities and phytotechnical companies to support the development and implementation of services aimed at ensuring food safety, food security and favorable environmental conditions.
3. Strengthening the relationship between science and education, training students in research, supporting young researchers, and implementing national, regional, and international cooperation in research, innovation, and technology transfer.
4. Promoting the development and dissemination of knowledge and the development of a knowledge-based society.

Laboratory of Phytopatology and Biotechnology was fond in 1976 by merging several divisions of the institute (Lab. of Virology, Bacteriology and Protozoan Diseases, Lab. of Entomopathogenic microorganisms, Lab. of Experimental Mycology, Lab. of Microbial Protection, Lab. of Phytopathology, Lab. of Biotechnology), which had been organized at the different stages of the Institute’s development. The laboratory staff work on achieving the following goals:

-    isolation, identification and improvement of phytopathogenic and useful microorganisms strains (viruses, bacteria, actynomycetes, fungi) for determination of their impact against agricultural crops and elaboration of the schemes for their utilization in the plant disease control.
-    elaboration of the methodological procedures and methods for identification and determination of the biological particulariries of perspective useful microbial agents (viruses, bacteria, actynomycetes, fungi) for producing and application of biological products for agricultural crops protection;
-    elaboration of the technological and biotechnological procedures for producing and application microbial products on the basis of viruses, bacteria, actynomycetes, fungi against disease causative agents and pests;
-    elaboration, testing and approval of the microbial products against harmful organisms for the main groups of the agricultural crops protection;
-    elaboration of the technological procedures and technologies of biological products application for plant protection in conventional and organic agruculture;
-    verification in production and implementation of laboratory and world achievements in agriculture and forestry of the Republic of Moldova;
-    promotion of scientific, technical achievements and advanced production technologies;
-    extension activity, training and professional development of specialists in the field of plant protection in conventional and organic agriculture;
-    participation in the development of the legislative framework in the field of plant protection and ecological agriculture as one of the priority area of the Institute's research and is based on the implementation of a number of basic provisions in the Republic of Moldova, the functionality of which is indispensable in connection with the study of many aspects of activity, first of all those included in the technological and research strategy.

Logistic potential

Investigations are carried out in 10 laboratory rooms intended for research in microbiology and production of microbial plant protection products.

Researchers are provided with 3 microscopes MBI-15, 7 microscopes MBI-1, MBI-3, Biolam and Biolar, 6 horizontal autoclaves, 8 water and warm air incubators, 6 fridges, 7 sterilizers with hot air, 2 centrifuges, 6 magnetic stirrers, 2 installations for the cultivation of microbial biomass, which are older than 15-25 years, cameras, photocolorimeters, installations in air conditioning cameras, computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers and cameras.

Financial resources

Investigations are funded according to the institute's cost estimates and do not have separate accounting. As a subdivision of a budgetary institution, laboratory got from the state budget the sums required for scientific activity in the framework of some projects. The laboratory team obtained grants as extra-budgetary sources.

In the framework of the International INTAS contract „Development of production technologies of biological means to protect the environment” in collaboration with the Research Station for Invertebrate Pathology (Saint-Cristol-Lez-Ales, France) and Institute for Biological Plant Protection (Darmstadt, Germany) investigation were funded in the amount of 30 000 ECU, and in the INTAS project  “Microbial preparations for plant protecţion in the sustainable agriculture” the amount of 20 000 ECU has been obtained.   

Within the MRDA/CRDF grant "Baculoviral Preparations for Environment Protection in the Sustainable Agriculture” 40 000 USD have been received. The MRDA/CRDF grants „Scientific Cooperation Program. Isolation and Identification of Entomopathogenic Nematodes for Control of Insects in Moldova” has been funded by 30 000 USD.

Scientific Results    

The laboratory team isolated and identified over 500 strains of microorganisms, selected the perspective ones as the pests and pathogens control agents and elaborated 5 viral, 6 fungal and 2 bacterial preparations, which are applied extensively in conventional and organic agriculture.

•    TRIHODERMIN-BL, for control of white, gray and root rot of vegetable, ornamental, leguminous crops, as well as tobacco seedlings; gray rot on strawberries and grape; cucumber ascochytosis, fusariosis and vegetable verticillosis. It is used against gray rot on vines 3-18 days before harvesting grapes, when the application of chemicals is prohibited, and the disease can bring 30-90% losses.
•    NEMATOFAGIN-BL-for control root nematodes in vegetable crops, strawberries, garlic, especially in greenhouse soils.
•    RIZOPLAN - for root rot of cereals and tobacco control. Tests of Rizopan on different crops showed high efficiency at a price 5-10 times lower than that of chemicals.
•    VIRIN-ABB-3 - for the fall webworm caterpillar (Hyphantria cunea) control in orchards, forests and parks. Since the pest attacks more than 200 trees species, the application of the VIRIN-ABB-3 is necessary in urban, recreational areas, on the side of roads, where the use of chemical preparations is not allowed.
•    VIRIN-KS-   for to control the cabbage moth (Mamestra brassicae) on cabbage, tomatoes, vegetables. The preparation is based on the cabbage moth nuclear polyhedrosis virus.
•    VIRIN-OS - for the control of turnip moth (Agrotis segetum) and moths of the genus Agrotis (Ypsilon, Exclamators) in vegetable, technical crops (tobacco, sugar beet), pumpkins and medicinal herbs.
•    VIRIN-HS-2 - for the control of the cotton bollworm and the bollworms of the genus Heliothis. The necessity for widespread use of this preparation is conditioned by the fact that there has been a sudden increase in the attack of cotton bollworm in recent years, especially during the tomato harvest period, when the application of chemical preparations is prohibited.
•    PAURIN – Pseudomonas  fluorescens CR-330D, patent  №182544,  registarted in the National Collection of RM № CNMN-Ps B-04, for bacterial cancer in fruit and wine crops control, as a stimulant for growing tomatoes in unheated greenhouses, control of bacterial diseases in potatoes, onions and peppers.

Measures for biological products approving were taken which allowed to cover the need for alternative means of plant protection in both intensive and organic agriculture.

Technological processes for the production and application of microbial products were elaborated and the technological documentation for the state registration (technological production regulations, technical indications and methodological application recommendations) of biological products was submitted: based on fungi - Trichodermin-SC applied at grapes, sunflowers, cereals and vegetables, Gliocladin-SC applied for the sunflowers and vines protection, Coniotirin-SC for sunflowers white rot control, Nematophagin-SC  - for Galician nematodes control; on entomopathogenic viruses base - the baculoviral preparation Virin-HS-P, based on the nuclear polyhedrosis virus,  for the cotton bollworm control; Paurin- bacterial preparation for the control of potato’s pathogens, which allows the control harmful organisms in organic and intensive agriculture systems.

The laboratory staff is currently working on the project „Synergism between natural factors and ecologically harmless microbial products of pests population density regulating for the protection of agricultural crops in conventional and organic agriculture” aimed at solving phytosanitary problems with the help of microbial products and natural and anthropogenic factors regulating the pests population density.

National and International cooperation

The laboratory members give lectures on t „Virology” for the 3rd year students of the Faculty of Biology and Pedology of the Moldova State University, as well as the normative course for the fourth year students from the Faculty of Horticulture of UASM.

In cooperation with colleagues from the Institute for Plant Protection in Tehran (Iran), research on baculoviruses (VPN and VG) in insects from the Noctuidae family identification was carried out. The laboratory staff presented a plenary report at the International Congress on Plant Protection carried out in Tehran.

In the framework of the MRDA/CRDF MBI-3003 grant investigations on elaboration of baculoviruses identification methods. This could be used for baculviruses preparations elaboration.

The laboratory members gave lectures on the courses of „Virology” and "Biotechnologies in Biological Protection" for students at the State University Dimitrie Cantemir and the Faculty of Horticulture of the State Agrarian University of Moldova, evolved as chairman of the state licensing and master's degree commissions from different universities.

Galina Lupaşcu la vârsta mărețelor împliniri

Galina Lupaşcu, doctor habilitat în ştiinţe biologice, profesor cercetător, s-a născut la 6 aprilie 1951 în satul Scoreni, raionul Străşeni. În anul 1968 absolveşte şcoala medie din s. Cojuşna, al aceluiași raion cu Medalie de Aur, iar în 1974 – Facultatea de Biologie şi Pedologie a Universităţii de Stat din Moldova cu Diplomă de menţiune.

Scientific direction:

Ecological systems for the protection of agricultural crops, the elaboration of procedures for the application of biorational means, the evaluation of the coordination mechanisms of the predator-sacrifice relations in the agricultural ashes and the ways of improving the biodiversity and the capitalization of their potential in protection technologies.

The purpose of the research:

Development of crop protection systems based on biorational and alternative chemical means. Elaboration of recommendations for preventing the resistance of pest populations to phytosanitary means from the classes of compounds used in conventional agriculture.

Fundamental research:

Study of biodiversity, the mechanism of interaction of organisms from useful fauna and pests of crop plants. Evaluation of the determinant indices of accumulation and maintenance of entomophagous species in agrocenoses.

Applied research:

Revealing the effects and ecological situation in agrocenoses, elaboration of ecological protection systems based on biorational means with the maximum involvement of biological resources.

Practical importance:

The laboratory investigations contribute significantly to the solution of fundamental and applicative problems aiming at the elaboration of biorational procedures for the protection of agricultural crops, the elaboration of recommendations regarding the accumulation, maintenance and rational capitalization of the useful fauna in agrocenoses.

Scientific skills:

The laboratory is the continuator of maintaining and developing the scientific-practical collection of insects, primarily useful, and mites of native fauna, currently consisting of 134 families, 1013 genera, 2793 species and 67,266 individuals located in entomological boxes, which is a valuable heritage for both the community scientific, as well as the general public students, specialists in the field, farmers.

The subdivision includes highly qualified specialists with experience in the field of systematics, fauna and breeding of phytophagous insects, mites and entomoacrypha, pheromone chemistry, insect biochemistry and physiology, arthropod resistance to insecticides, agricultural entomology and plant protection. During the last years, 6 researchers within the fundamental research project, were concerned with the elaboration of contemporary methods of directing the populations of arthropod pests and their natural enemies in the agrocenoses of fruit and vegetable crops.

Relevant results:

• Ecological technology for protection of apple culture against apple worm by using ecologically harmless means (launch of ooparasites at the egg stage, treatment of the larval stage with inhibitors of chitin synthesis, application of strains to capture larvae of age V, mass capture of males with pheromone traps).
• Technological process for creating artificial reserves of nectariferous plants for the attraction, maintenance and multiplication of beneficial arthropod species as a natural lever for regulating the density of species harmful to peach cultivation, oriental moth and striped moth;
• The process of applying protein-carbohydrate compounds as artificial nutrients and semiochemical attractants (methyl-salicylate) with attraction properties from adjacent cenoses and localization of beneficial fauna from the families Encyrtidae, Scelionidae, Mymaridae, Trichogrammatidae, Braconidaers in Ichneumii pi.
• Colorful traps with attractants (rosemary and jasmine essential oil) against Thrips tabaci and Trialeyroides vaporariorum, which exceed 10-15 times the catch of pests compared to standard traps for peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions and allow their signaling on plants, including quarantine tripe species, two weeks earlier than the traditional method.

Scientific direction

  • -    Research on the behaviour of phytophagous and entomophagous species and their monitoring in seasonal dynamics;
  • -    Study of alternative means/tools for the monitoring of pests’ populations, on the base of biological active substances: pheromones and botanical active substance, and entomophagous;
  • -    Assessment of the role of biological active substances and entomophagous in the regulating of the density of phytophagous population and phytopathogens;
  • -    Estimation of biological efficacy, selectivity of biological active substances, and entomophagous;
  • -    Development of the methods for the assessment of the efficacy of plant protection products based on biological active substances and entomophages and their incorporation into Integrated Pest Management System (IPM) strategies of plant protection;

Scientific skills

The basic directions of the investigations are focused: • On the elaboration of methodological elements for the monitoring of the target pests by applying pheromone traps and those with light;  • On the assessment of the daily and seasonal behaviour of phytophagous; • On the assessment of the fertility of pests degree in seasonal dynamics and generations; • On the development of new biological pests control methods (sterilization, mass capture of males, disorientation);

Another important direction of the investigation concerns the elaboration of the new botanical active substances obtained from  different plant species and plant material; demonstration of the sufficient efficacy of botanical plant protection products in pest/weed/diseases control.

Other important directions of investigation concern: • monitoring of beneficial insects and assessment of entomophagous behavior; • elaboration of the methods for mass multiplication of laboratory hosts and entomophagous; • elaboration of the methodological elements for the use of entomophagous for the biological control of phytophagous; • monitoring of natural entomophagous, the highlighting of edifying species, and the appreciation of their biological effect on reducing the density of pests populations; • appreciation of the place of the developed biological methods in the IPM systems.

Relevant results

It has been shown that the addition of the tocopherols component to the composition of the standard pheromone of the Heliothis armigera stalk has a significant influence on increasing the attractiveness of males by about 2 times compared to the standard composition and has synergistic properties. The re-evaluation of the enthological peculiarities of the pests Heliothis armigera and Agrotis segetum in the conditions of climate change showed that on the territory of the Republic of Moldova there is an extension of the flight start terms by about 15 days and the third generation - by 30 days. This factor extends accordingly to the harmfulness and aggressiveness of the populations of pests Heliothis armigera, Agrotis segetum - the development of three generations per season, and the moth Ostrinia nubilalis - two generations. It was found that the sexual correlation of the species Heliothis armigera (0.8♂: 1.2♀) differs from that of the species Agrotis segetum (1.3♂: 0.8♀). It has been shown that Heliothis armigera and Agrotis segetum are polygamous and can maintain up to 6 mating acts. The reproductive potential depends on the sequence of generations. It was shown that the application of the method of mass capture of Heliothis armigera and Agrotis segetum males influenced the reductions by about 50% compared to the control of the number of eggs laid on soybean and sweet corn. It was found that the monitoring in seasonal dynamics of the imago and egg stages of Heliothis armigera and Agrotis segetum and fixing the results on digital maps allows the appreciation of spatial distribution areas and the appearance of outbreaks depending on the phenological phases of soybean and sweet corn crops. The methodology for launching the Trichogramma and Bracon entomophagous has been modified due to which 52% of eggs and 56% of pest larvae have been parasitized. It was shown that the mixed composition of rhubarb leaves and roots has stimulating properties on seed germination, and has fungicidal effect on phytopathogens Fusarium. It was found that groups of natural entomomags (Chrysopa carnea, Сoccinella septempunctata, Adonia varigata, Harmonia axyridis, Epistrophe balteata) can control the development of pest populations in the Aphididae family. Their efficacy on the background of the application of biological agents as means of protection, was about the 65% on the reduction of the pest populations density in the Aphidoidea family. It has been shown that the application of the capturing and sterilizing the males method of the buhe complex reduces the number of eggs laid by 50%, performing 5 launches of the entomophagous Trichogramma leads to the parasitism of the 52% of the eggs of the buhe complex, and 7 launches of Bracon leads to the parasitism of the 56% of larvae. Due to the development of new methodological and technological elements for the consecutive chain application of biological agents, it has been shown that the attack of soybean and corn plants has been reduced to 2%, compared to 31% in the control.

Laboratorul Bioreglatori  Naturali a fost creat de profesorul CHINTEA Pavel în 1990.

Direcțiile de cercetare:

  • Identificarea surselor vegetale pentru obținerea substanțelor biologic active (reglatori de creȘtere, antioxidanți, biopesticide, substanțe antivirale) și coloranți alimentari naturali;
  • Obținerea extractelor cu conținut de substanțe biologic active, purificarea și determinarea principiilor active ale extractelor sau preparatelor în diferite forme preparative (extract lichid sau uscat, bioconjugat polimer, ulei esențial);
  • Testarea in vitro sau in vivo a activității biologice a extractelor obținute și compușilor izolați în calitate de bioreglatori de creștere a plantelor, antioxidanți și biopesticide;
  • Elaborarea procedeelor de obținere ale  preparatelor naturale noi cu activitate  biologică Și aplicarea  acestora in agricultura ecologică, silvicultură și industria alimentară.

Linaria spp., Veronica spp., Verbascum spp., Carthamus tinctorius, Juniperus spp., Fagus sylvatica, Juglans regia, Phytolacca americana și alte specii  de plante ca sursă de substanțe biologic active cu  perspectivă de utilizare în agricultură, silvicultură și industria alimentară.

Rezultate relevante:

Preparate MOLDSTIM, ECOSTIM, PAVSTIM si MESTIM au fost elaborate, standardizate, certificate și implementate în tehnologiile de cultivare a plantelor ca reglatori de creștere și dezvoltare a plantelor. Preparatele sunt inofensive pentru mediul ambiant, sporesc în mare măsură productivitatea culturilor și toleranța plantelor la condiții meteorologice nefavorabile și la boli.
Au fost elaborate si publicate recomandări cu privire la aplicarea regulatorilor naturali de creștere în tehnologia de cultivare a culturilor cerealiere și legumicole.
