The Laboratory of Molecular Genetics

Head:  TUMANOVA Lidia, PhD, associated professor

Laboratory staff: 10 researchers, including 5 PhD

Research directions:

1.    Molecular genetic study of crop plant genomes
2.    Technology of molecular diagnostics of phytopathogens

Scientific approaches:

•    Use of Software and Online Databases for molecular primers creating
•    PCR, nested-PCR, multiplex-PCR, real-time PCR
•    Analysis of the efficiency of created primers for the PCR diagnostics of phytopathogens
•    Molecular diagnostics of phytopathogens in the plants, insects and soil

Relevant results:

Design of specific primers was carried out to detect plant pathogens (TYLCV2, Ca. P. solani, species from Fusarium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Myrothecium, Penicillium) that lead to yield loss and deterioration of quality of agricultural products.

PCR analysis of DNA samples from wheat, tomatoes, and maize collected at different stages of development allowed to establish the stages of their infection. Pathogens were identified in the case of mixed infection of agricultural plants. It has been shown that assessing the concentration of pathogenic DNA in plant tissues is an effective method for assessing plant resistance to a particular pathogen. Soil DNA was analyzed for the presence of phytopathogens that produce mycotoxins, the amount of which is regulated by the EU.

Business proposals:

Potential users of molecular diagnostics technology of pathogenic fungi, viruses and bacteria may be researchers of laboratories of expertise of agricultural production in the Republic of Moldova as well as the economic agents of agricultural industry of Moldova.
